Thunderbird is a feature-rich and mature mail client. However, it lacks support for address book synchronization via CardDAV and it also lacks the ability to automatically discover calendars and address books available on the server. Therefore add-ons are required to synchronize with Nextcloud. A combination of the "Lightning calendar", "TBSync" and "Provider for CalDAV & CardDAV" add-ons will enable you to synchronize your contacts and calendars. They can be easily installed through Thunderbird’s add-on manager.

Once those add-ons installed, just configure TBSync and you're good to go. Configuration is fairly quick and simple. Check the official documentation for a step-by-step guide.

Starting with Thunderbird 102, you can sync with Nextcloud natively through CardDav and CalDav, so you don't need the add-ons anymore. I've got it syncing contacts, calendar and tasks smoothly across several devices.
