This application can connect to a Collabora Online (or other) server (WOPI-like Client). Nextcloud is the WOPI Host. Please read the documentation to learn more about that.

You can also edit your documents off-line with the Collabora Office app from the Android and iOS store.

I love this app! It took me a little time to get it configured but once I did, it was well worth it. I'm also surprised at how quick and snappy it is, I know that it's mostly bc the server is sitting five feet from me, but still being faster that G docs is nothing to sneeze at

Setup took some time but works in the end. I run the CODE instance via docker with a nginx reverse proxy, following the instructions from https://sdk.collaboraonline.com/docs/installation/CODE_Docker_image.html and https://sdk.collaboraonline.com/docs/installation/Proxy_settings.html#reverse-proxy-settings-in-nginx-config-ssl-termination

Some troubleshoot hints:

  1. Consult steps from https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/office/troubleshooting.html for connectivity between nextcloud and code.
  2. Use Chrome developer tools to debug extension problems, this is not mentioned too much in existing documentations. Open a document from the template folder and watch for error messages in the dev tool console.

Office compatibility is much better than it used to be, and the interface is very responsive and functional. The Android editor built into the Nextcloud app works great. This makes a very attractive alternative to Google Docs or Microsoft 365.

@Marcel Waldvogel 6.8GB sounds about right

I can't use docker on my VPS so I built it from source, and it works great.

FYI

LibreOffice - 4.7GB online/lool - 1.4GB poco - 566M

Actually building it myself seems to have it running faster/leaner as well.

Previously online/lool's directory was 3.4GB by itself with the child-root holding around 2.5GB of cache

With me building it, it's sitting at 800mb.

It's also more practical to me then running OnlyOffice for my use case at least.

Now just to be clear, I prefer OnlyOffice as it has better MS Office support (can handle those weird documents with lots of boxes/extras other then just text and save it to where word can read it 90% correctly vs onlyoffice 75-80%) and looks better. The downside is it uses a lot more resources, I mean a lot 4GB minimum to collabora using 1.5GB (at the end of the day) is great, when my VPS only has 4GB of ram to start with.

One of the greatest apps to get away from the centralized providers.

6.8G in the Docker folder for this!? Wut!?

/var/lib/docker/aufs

I'm a positive person and I want to be useful, but in this instance, the most useful constructive comment I can make is: WHAT!? 6.8 gigs just to run the Docker app? Talk about a sledgehammer to crack a nut!

Nextcloud's team is awesome, so there's gotta' be some way to get this otherwise great app working. And, don't tell me it's a Docker problem. Nextcloud needs office without using 6.8 gigs. Come on, awesome Nextcloud people. You're better than that.

Since I found this problem I'm disabling it on all my servers until this becomes an app worthy of Nextcloud's awesomeness. Then, I will write a different review.

Fan-damn-tastic! I had one hiccup getting it to work cause I'm doing my server management with Virtualmin, but all it turned out to be was opening the port in my FirewallD for the 9980 lool traffic. It's such a dream to work in the cloud using LibreOffice software.

Took a little figuring it out how to install with Mail In A Box but once I did it works flawlessly. Finally, was able to get off GSuites.
