OwnBackup is the simple database backup solution for your ownCloud 8.1+ or Nextcloud installation.

Its main purpose is to provide an easy solution to restore the tables of an app in case you accidentally corrupted the data or did anything you regret later.

  • Use this app at your own risk! Data loss may occur!
  • This app is no replacement for a more professional backup solution!

Rubbish app, with pathetically bad documentation.

Once installed, it was difficult to even find it's UI. Once found, the UI appeared to only provide the option to restore, not backup. That makes it basically useless. It had links to some random third party site "easycron", which was supposed to tell me how to set a cron job for hourly backups. There was no obvious way to be able to manually back up my databases. This is in Nextcloud 17.

Ownbackup was not able to detect the database of a single app. It couldn't even find Contacts or Calendar. I tried to make it work for about 30 minutes before giving up and simply using the command line via PuTTY.

This app is garbage. It doesn't backup databases, it only wastes time.

It works as advertised. If you are running nextcloud on a shared webhoster and having trouble getting the automated backups to happen read on.

The "problem": After successful installation only manual backups work. No automatic backups through cron job. This is for nextcloud 11.0.1. with app installed from the App list in Admin. The cron job is set up and running. There is an entry in oc_jobs with "0" in last_run and the date of the one and only manual in last_checked. Have stopped and started the cron job and also put the whole site in maintenance mode and back to no avail.

The solution: Ok, it was my fault: The cron.php script was not running properly and I didn't notice. For the sake of those who might run into a similar situation here is a more detailed explanation of what happened: I have my nextcloud running on a shared hoster (all-inkl) that provides cronjob functionality through their management console (https://kas.all-inkl.com). Shortly before I installed ownbackup I'd changed the cron type in the nextcloud admin server settings from Webcron to Cron because I incorrectly assumed that the latter was the right one. It was only after calling the https://nextcloud.mydomain.com/cron.php directly that I realized it was producing an error and not running the jobs listed in oc_jobs.
