This app hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of Nextcloud.
It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of Nextcloud.
I observe, test and contribute to some extent to this app in around a year, and may say that it is dynamically developing and shows a good case, how jabber/xmpp clients may be user friendly. In particular, with adding a/v calls, improving interface.
What I would like to see is to have a/v conferencing, deeper integration with the file system and the workflow.
By now it is much more comfortable to work rather than with monstrous solution of Talk.
I also do hope that some kind of good desktop client may be also developed.
Offtop: Regarding Androind apps, I highly recommend Pix-Art or Conversations. They are super nice.

I feel Joe bellow this ra(n)ting is a bit unfair towards this great app: lack of 'talk', spreed or spreed.me integration is possibly an intentional feature of the 'talk' - any xmpp server can be used. and 'talk' is not compatible with the xmpp standard (exclusivity is the name of the game)
and it would not be for the first time this happened - both Facebook chat and Google Talk used xmpp to gather crowds untill it was not convenient for them to stick with a standard where other than the official clients can be used.</rant>
this application is very nice indeed, I am looking forward to get a fully featured xmpp server working with this, as Joe mentioned, the emoji and otp encryption are there in 4.0.0-rc.1 and look good (will test this next week)

Fantastic app. I consider it a must have. Would be nice if there were integration with talk so we had talk features for video and voice with chat via this. Technically this does have voice/video support, but there aren't really any good android apps for xmpp that have it as well so it's not as useful as the talk app is in that regard. I love how this app is always available no matter where you are in the cloud though. I wish it had a better emoji selector, at the moment you have to use the emoji character codes to send them. I'm looking forward to 4.x which will add omemo support for end to end encryption.

Should be merged into Nextcloud Talk.

Olivier: When using the internal XMPP server, this is true. The internal XMPP server is meant for small, close-knit groups and an easy start. Setting up your own XMPP server with full control and global federation options is not too hard, if you are not afraid of the Linux command line prompt. There is a step-by-step guide at https://github.com/jsxc/xmpp-cloud-auth/wiki

This app comes with one important caveat. It exposes ALL users of the instance to everybody. Beware if you are using groups.
