this is THE alternative to Google Photos and/or Amazon Photos. Actually it is split into several parts where this app is "just" one part. You need some other tools (recognize and its deps, preview gen) to get the full potential but wow.. it was worth every single second spending time on this!
Yes the categorization & recognizance is not perfect but still impressive. it makes it way easier finding something, especially as you can search for a given tag and bam.. I mean awesome job really.
all these pieces together are what I've ever searched for and I can finally get rid of services which do not care (much) about my privacy while still having all I need and last but not least much more free space on my phone - without loosing "memories" ;) .
migrating photos
Besides simply uploading my photos via the Nextcloud app I also used the "Google Integration" app from the web store to import older Google photos, too.
During the migration of my >100 GB of photos from several sources (backups, Google, phone, etc) I got hit by the fact of having a looot of duplicates though.
There is a Nextcloud app "duplicate finder" but using that one on thousands of duplicates is not actually usable.
Instead I used https://github.com/steadfasterX/nextcloud_scripts/blob/main/nextcloud-duplicates-tagger.sh and then used a web browser to verify & delete (based on the "duplicate" tag).
usage
My Android Nextcloud app syncs the local camera folder and delete uploaded pics locally. That folder is my "Media" dir in Nextcloud and also used in Memories as default.. and the world is perfect for me.
This way pics gets re-downloaded when needed, when I delete something locally it will be deleted on my server etc..
final words | TL;DR
if a project is worth to get sponsored via github, here it is!

Impressive how well this works and how easy the installation was. Should just be the default

A million times better than the default gallery application. I can't believe I endured that for so long; This one is just perfect. It's fast, it's featureful, and it's intuitive. Bravo!

This app is great! it's the best drop-in replacement for Google Photos; timeline view, albums+shared, and they just released a mobile app for Android in early access.
10/10, thank you team for all the hard work you do!

This app is a BIG improvement over the default Photos app. The 2.0 version of the default photos app was a good start, but as of May 2023 it still has some major flaws including:
No EXIF support for sorting photos
No timeline scrubbing
Overall sluggishness
Memories is super fast, has a very responsive (and mobile compatible) timeline view with:
Easy scrubbing
EXIf support that sorts photos correctly the first time
You can choose the default photo directory instead of having to litter .noimage files around your entire nextcloud.
Share different size versions of photos (great for fitting large photos in emails).
Looking forward to the continued future development of this app!
An excellent gallery app that any photo lover must install!.
Give it a try and you will be surprised!

This is the missing photo app in Nextcloud. A must have!
Even in NC25 the photos app is ways to slow and sluggish when you have several thousand photos in your Nextcloud.
Memories has a great performance - and the timeline is exactly what's needed.

Very good alternative to the built-in photo manager. Just remember to rebuild the index if you cannot view any photo after a major version upgrade.

An excellent replacement for the built in Photo's app that leverages the database instead of WebDav. Make sure you follow the directions and run the initial scan command, but after that you are off to the races. Also lets you specify which directory you store your media (photos and videos). I put them in a subfolder which saves me from having to put .nomedia files all across the Nextcloud file storage just to keep everything else from being recognized (something I wish the built in Photos does).
