I'm starting to love the Mail app. I've been a Nextcloud user for a decade. I've tried the Mail app before, but just wasn't there yet. I started trying it again last month. There have been a lot of improvements. I still use Thunderbird primarily. But, when I'm in NextCloud and working, it's a great companion. Thank you to the developers for your continued work and time on this app!

One of the main reasons I started using Nextcloud 4 years ago was to be able to have all the apps integrated. One of the most wanted apps has always been "mails". What a disappointment! This APP is going from bad to worse; ghost emails, attachments and images that can't be viewed, slow/freezing UI, etc. On Github they have 707 open issues (and still growing). Now, force users to use AI? Really? This has to be optional! Someone has to take action on this matter. This is a very important APP and it seems like nobody cares what direction it may take.

As fast as I installed this app I removed it. To be forced to use AI with the Priority Inbox-"Feature" is an absolute no-go for me. It should be considered as an option and not as an default. Yes, there are people who doesn't get the AI hype. At least I want to get the chance to chose if I use it or not. And if yes which AI is used.

The app is quite basic, but it gets constantly new features. The performance improved as well lately.

The real problem is how buggy it is. It's basically impossible to use it, without running in some sort of problem, like ghost emails, freezing UI, missing Pictures. They have 689 open issues right now, with (in average) two new ones coming every day. Some are duplicates, but it shows that users are frustrated.

We are using this app in our school because of the integration with the address book, but as the system administrator, I'm having quite a hard time keeping the teachers calm.

I hope the developers realize how important the app is, and put all effort into fixing bugs, before adding new features.

Utilizes AI ("Machine Learning") and forces users to use a "Priority Inbox," which disrupts workflow and hides important messages while promoting useless ones. No way to disable the AI/ML+"Priority Inbox" features without going into the code and manually hacking it out, which is overwritten on every update. Developers seem more interested in fighting users who do not want the feature than actually taking any sort of constructive feedback.

I really want to like this app. On NC24, it was not really usable. Too slow. Even more so if you check numerous email accounts. I used Rainloop, instead, despite not being as well incorporated into Nextcloud as the mail app is. Now on NC25, I can say there has been a vast improvement on Ver. 2.+

However, it is still slow, just not as slow. Snappymail, the replacement to Rainloop is faster and loads emails in a flash. Unlike the mail app which is slower to load every.single.email. The mail app nags at you if you go through a lot of correspondence everyday, but if you are just checking only one account, and do not do much in terms of email, the mail app is now "OK." Which is an improvement. I mean, read the email reviews from 3 months ago from the posting of this one. They all rate it as bad.

Update: It continues to improve but it is still feels sluggish, even on NC 27. The mail app is now prettier, thanks to NC25, and if you like how it incorporates with Nextcloud, then give it a try --albeit I am still getting the odd deprecated error on my logs-- while using it. Hopefully, that will change with time.

You might like it, but if you want speed, then check Snappymail or try elsewhere. Or hopefully, the mail app will get even faster with time.

This app really isn't good enough to be used as a primary email client. Emails that I deleted long ago from other devices show up as "unread": but when I click on them I get a message that the email can't be found. There are no basic settings for adding an email signature, nor configuring how often each account is checked. There is no spam filtering. The app really isn't developed enough for me to consider filing a bug report.

Once configured, the mail app's native 'feel' (uses DB, theme, etc) coupled with occ scripting support and UI features like scheduled send make this app one of my favorite installs. Thanks for the good work!

I'm trying to like the app because integration with Nextcloud would be more than ideal, but goodness... It's slow, lacks basic features like HTML signatures or even just the ability to add a logo centered on the left, emails archived long ago still showing in the inbox but empty, no usable templates (there’s a workaround with text files that insert as raw text without any formatting), etc... Just make a functional copy of Roundcubeβ€”no one will blame you. Then, once the basic features of an email client are in place, you can add the options that matter most to you.

I don't see what the use for a write only email client is. At least it's better than pre NC25 where you couldn't send or recieve, you can now send, but not recieve. The counter of unread emails updates, however, it says "No messages in this mailbox" if you try to open your inbox.

It has serious problems with keeping large mailboxes/folders updated in comparison to other mail clients available. I won't call it a mature app. Tested version 1.14.3.

Let's be honest about the Nextcloud default mail app: It is not good enough to be usable as a unique/default mail app.

Advantages: Default integration with NC environment

Inconvenients: Interface is slow compare to other apps, including mail app (such as Snappy) The search functionality is prehistoric and barely usable, in most case it just won't find what you are looking for.

My comment here is not to spit some hates over devs, which I sincerely thank for their work, but I hope they understand the overall experience is not what people expect when using a modern webmail application.

Pros:

  • Good intergration with NC

Cons

  • Very sluggish even with e-mail server running on the same machine
  • UI needs a lot of improvement (poorly chosen font size, useless features, etc.)

Usable if all you want is a quick peak at your inbox but way too slow and unresponsive for any real work.

Continual improvement until it has reached the point it has become unusable. Don't see any way to turn off the 'advanced' features - eg, the priority inbox, which shows mail such as:

"This guy offered his white wife to the African tribesmen as a gift in exchange for their secret manhood elongation ritual. And it WORKED!"

I make no comment on what this says about the developers priorities, or those of their partners.

This just isn't that great; the interface is very slow to load even on fast hardware, the fonts are massive and there's a ton of wasted space so everything is cut off even though it doesn't need to be. If your mail provider doesn't have a web interface this would do in a pinch, but it's definitely not pleasant to look at or use.

Not happy about the "take it or leave it" approach.

You can either be happy with the choices the developer makes and have to live with it - or you are out of luck. There is nothing that can be configured, nothing that can be adjusted. The app is "as is".

If that's fine for you, then the app just works.

If you have higher expectation then you will be disappointed.

Probably one of the best supported and maintained app on the marketplace. And that's despite it not working for my particular configuration.

I'm using protonmail bridge, but due to their issue with paginated calls on their bridge IMAP interface, this app doesn't function for me. I understand this is an issue with the protonmail bridge, not the Mail app. That being said, my attempts with my other GMAIL address worked flawlessly.

The app is being actively developed and is getting better with every update, while it's not perfect yet and not as stable as alternatives such as rainloop, its deep integration with nextcloud is a worthy trade-off.

This app may have potential, as it supposed to be well integrated with core Nextcloud. However, it is being advertised as "Production ready", but its too early to discsuss even "Beta" or "Rc" phase - as you can check github issues - app is not working for many instances, and development is really struggling with core issues (indexing mailboxes, just to start).

It would be good to push more developers into this app, change temporary status to "alpha" or more corresponding ( to avoid buggy perception of "production Nextcloud"), and after fixing and warming up enough in QA - bring back with production glory.

Also, configuring mailboxes needs some debug capabilities available only for admin users (checking the logs etc), or at least power users (some errors with IMAP and SMTP can be seen only in JSON and/or in nextcloud.log file). This should be handled in frontend, for the sake of UX.

Looking forward for the next updates, cheers!

Quantum Leap - I can now read and write mails in my rather large account. Also the UI has improved tremendously. I can now use it for most mailing instead of Rainloop (which has always been somehow alien to Nextcloud - and not supported wall either) Now we can attach and receive attachments from Nextcloud without first downloading them to the local machine which my result in leaving them behind there unintentionally.

Good Job.

I apreciate integration wint nextcloud, but the UI / UX is very vey discutable.

  • the only one layout witl all on the left side
  • bookmarks with only one level (more deep bookmarks are shown in the 2nd level, name is truncated)
  • the NC tree style (maybe someone likes it, but I don't ...) overally, the UI seems rather like prototype.

There is another app - Rainloop mail app for NC, which has much much much better UI, but missing NC integration. What if developers join forces and create only one app which satisfy all requirements (I see the Rainloop as a better starting point)?

i guess its ok, not really for normal use, but in times when no other mail client is available, this can help. my main issues with this application:

  • mail attachments are not being shown anywhere.
  • no images being shown, button which states that no images being shown does πŸ’©
  • normal text emails have reply form hidden below the bottom of screen, while HTML emails show this normally.
  • mobile view is working quite well, but does not fit the screen while consisting of mostly empty space (possibly localization issue)

For me, the app can only receive, can't enter an email address in the "to" field or select an address from the contact.

The bug would need to be fixed for the app to work like any other mail client.

Attaching a reply to the bottom of the email in the way this does is not intuitive and makes it somewhat confusing to use. Having the "send" button always showing even when you haven't attempted to reply or can't even see the section where the reply exists is a bit silly too. Turning on dark mode makes it a little better because then at least you can see the line break between the email you're reading and the section to reply with. Its still clunky. A proper reply button would make it at least passable for light users.

Nicely integrated into Nextcloud, but difficult to use

  • Unclean reading layout: The authors probably expect that the user will want to respond to every displayed email and added a predefined "reply-to" section to the display layout. Very confusing, unclear what is the original email and what not.
  • Delete, archive, move-to folder icons are missing or hidden under "toast" menu.
  • "Favourite" folders feature to show those of my interest on top of the full hierarchy is missing.
  • It replaces your email addresses (incl. aliases) with funky you. Although hovering over with a mouse tells the actual address of mine, it is clumsy. So, it is useful to check out the email, but not to really use it on a daily basis - many Android apps seem to do a better job, unfortunately.

It's close, but the reality is it's not ready if you need to do work emails.

Signatures has been a missing feature here for so long it's a clear indicator that it doesn't matter to it's core users/developers. The truth here is that lack of a missing feature means it can never really be used to handle email accounts that are work related.

When ever this issue is raised it seems to be answered by a variant of 'go code it then'. That's cool, i get it, but facts are facts that using this mail client for any (German company for example) work email is going to result in you not having the legally required signature. Which is a shame, it is my IMHO a lot better than rainloop but the reality is rainloop is a better choice if you want to be able to have an signature in any of your emails.

Hopefully it'll be sorted sometime but it's literally been years now and the closest they've got to it is $100 bucks being offered for it.

If this app is to be a killer app then years to have an email signature isn't the way

Dear developers,

Thank you for your work. This app is a good idea. Unfortunately I am missing many functions. Since Nextcloud is becoming a colaboration platform I expect many other functions which for Mail in Open-XChange is offering. Hope that you'll add new functions this year.
